New Amendments to the Paid Parental Leave Act

Are you aware of the new amendments to the Government Paid Parental Leave scheme for employees?

From 1 July 2020, eligible employees will be able to claim Parental Leave Pay (PLP) in two separate periods – a set period and a flexible period – to allow increased flexibility for parents returning to the workforce after the birth or adoption of a child.

Set Period

This is a period of 12 weeks which must be used within 12 months of the birth/adoption of the child and has remained unchanged under the new amendments.

Flexible Period

This period is up to a total of 30 days to be used within 24 months of a child’s birth or adoption.

Employees may elect to return to work on a more flexible basis as negotiated with employers. For example, an employee may commence work on a part-time basis 3 days per week and claim the remaining 2 days under the Parental Leave scheme.

These amendments do not change the National Employments standards or the entitlement to Dad and Partner Pay.
